RotJ: Japanese Dub Complete Edition (v2.0 Released)

I finished watching this dub today, and wanted to say thanks for sharing it – it’s a fantastic dub! It was a nice surprise to hear the different foley work done for this dubbing, alongside the actual voice dubbing itself.

Out of curiosity, was this dub only ever done for the 1988 Japanese TV broadcast, and not released on LaserDisc, VHS or DVD?
If so, I imagine that the only way to obtain this dub would have been via recoding it onto a blank VHS tape when ROTJ was broadcast?

That is correct. The data on the tape from the first broadcast was given to me by an acquaintance; it was of lower quality than Return of the Pug, but it was well worth it to edit this dubbing to 35mm standards. After its last broadcast in 1997, this dubbed version was neither rerun nor sold on VHS or other formats. The 2006 DVD was my last hope, but it contained only the VHS version with the narration removed and the dubbed versions of the 1980 and 1982 theatrical releases.

I am the same age as 2006 DVD, so I honestly don’t know the detailed situation back then. But, well, this is probably the only restoration of a dubbed TV version in this way in the world. I hope this will be the beginning of a day when the Japanese dubbed versions of the past can once again take center stage.

RotJ: Japanese Dub Complete Edition (v2.0 Released)

I’ve decided to make a 1988 TV dubbed-only version as a gift for a friend, and instead of v1.0, I’m sharing it with you all.
4K83 v2.0 is used, with a little color correction. The audio is the same as v1.0.
Please wait until v2.0 for MKV which includes VHS dubbing. Editing will begin as soon as DEED v3.1 is released.

will the theatrical version be done anytime soon? i wanna watch the one i saw in my cinema again (Australia)

It is quite difficult to watch the original version in my environment. It will take some time because of other editing tasks, but when it is ready, we will use the Blu-ray footage together to create the highest quality original version.

This project will resume once we have 35mm film for screening.

Is that likely? I’m very interested to see what the 35mm Greedo subtitles looked like in the Japanese release!

FY570-35MA, the subtitles on this laserdisc are similar to the specifications of the first theatrical release.
However, some of the subtitles need to be changed to those of the 2006 Bonus DVD.

Well, to be honest, it would be reasonable to reproduce the film using only past materials rather than waiting for the 35mm film to be leaked. Japanese visual materials, such as the Japanese opening of The Empire Strikes Back, are still scarce.
