Which Year Would You Live In?

Author

 (Edited)

If you had to live in one year for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Fixing the year means that nothing in it except the people (and their pets) will age or change. Political, economic and environmental conditions will remain fixed. Nothing new will ever be invented. Nothing new will be written or performed. The overall population of the world, its prevailing attitudes and activities will remain the same.

Nothing specific that happened in that year is guaranteed to happen. You are not going back in time to reclaim your lost youth or reunite with loved ones, you will live in that year as your current self. You will have the same group of family, friends and acquaintances you have now, with the possibility of adding to this group. Your current income and possessions will be replaced with the equivalent for the time.

If people are aging and changing, then politics will change and new things will continue to be invented and created. It’s impossible to have a scenario in which some of these things change and some remain fixed. It’s one or the other because they are inseparably tied. This only works in a groundhog day type scenario in which once the year ends you go back to the start of the year again.

No, no, no. Only people you know personally age and change. A wizard did it.

The scenario is the easy part. Choosing the year… not so much.

What are you willing to go without (or put up with) in order to get rid of (or get back) other things?

Nothing?

I prefer to live in the moment. Two seconds ago sucked.

So, 2016? You could check out the future, but that could be risky.

Two seconds from now will suck too.

I don’t know, what was the question again?

1955

Quiet, you! Or I’ll put the words Alternate, Timeline AND Universe in the title.

Oh, yeah. I can’t. Plus this thread will sink like a stone.

Care to elaborate? Why '87 and not '86 or '88?

Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this Wall! 80s power! Economy booming

I would be happy with 1995

After Frink chooses I’ll make my choice. I plan to pick the year before Frink’s year, and I plan on spending every single day shit talking him to everyone else. How pissed is he going to be when he shows up?

Screw this scenario. I’m going to take the best of all eras and combine them into an optimized pocket universe.

  1. Would say 85 (living in California) but Richard Ramirez was doing his thing then so fuck that.

I’d go with sometime in the 70s or 80s, but I kind of like the Internet, so…

And here we have the tradeoff. The 2000s have the Internet (great) and other great technology (HD, 4K TVs, etc.) but everything else besides tech sucks.

At least we have Sam Smith.

That is why I chose 1995…internet and CDs coupled with ready 80s access… 😉
