There are some threads on the changes made to original series and films (music or edits and such) when released years later on DVD, blu ray or streaming services etc in the ‘General, Technical & Format Discussions’ category of An Index Of Projects & Help Thread for Preservation of Other Properties. They may be helpful to you?

I’ll look into those. The thing I keep running into a lot of times is there’s a lot of initial hooplah about a 2000s DVD set but then nobody ever checks if a show got fixed for a bluray or streaming.

… Here’s some updates of my own BTW:

… Someone here on the forums was able to help me get an uncut version of In The Heat of the Night TV series from a streaming service.

… someone on reddit told me Golden Girls is missing a “microwave clip” (that apparently was only shown in original broadcast and edited even out of reruns) but seems otherwise uncut.

… Incredible Hulk (Bixby/Ferrigno one) I’ve not been able to find anything that claims there was ever edits to any DVD release. For me this one is a more complex issue as I already own the DVDs so my question was more “is there a reason to upgrade to bluray?” but its sounding to me like there isn’t.

… someone told me somewhere that MacGyver’s DVDs used to have music edits but I was unable to find out what episodes were affected and if this was fixed for the bluray.

For what it’s worth I was able to find something about Knight Rider: apparently a German company called Turbine was able to release a set that had the episodes with ALL the original music intact and nothing missing.

So that’s one show covered. Checking my options about MacGyver and Quantum Leap. What I’ve found about QL is that the Fabulous Films UK set is the best way to get an uncut version of one episode, but it might be worse than the US Mill Creek set in other ways.

MacGyver I’m totally up in the air about.

need info about In The Heat of the Night (1980s TV series)
Time

I asked this on reddit but I get mostly people gushing about the show, not any concrete info. So I’m hoping you guys know something.

First, what is this show’s OAR? I’ve seen it on streaming and its always in widescreen, which is unusual for a 1980s TV series, but then Columbo was shot in widescreen so I’m wondering if this is a case like that.

Secondly, apparently the R1 DVD releases are missing some episodes (according to Wikipedia), so I’m wondering if the missing episodes ever got a release anywhere in the world or can be found anywhere at all?

Thanks in advance.

Wondering if these have been done already (70s-80s animation related)

I have both the bluray and a vhs copy of Lord Of The Rings. It should be a simple edit. I’ll do it
sometime this week when I have time.
I hadn’t noticed the change in the narration at the end. I did replace the audio from my Return Of The King
and Hobbit animated movies with the VHS audio because there were a bunch of missing sound effects.
I have Asterix and Cleopatra with English audio and full screen in HD but I don’t know if there is missing
footage. Could you tell me what to look for?

Versions I found online tended to be missing two things. Ironically WHICH thing they were missing is different between versions. They’re both right near the beginning of the movie though.

This Youtube upload claims to be from a DVD source. Right as the video begins there’s this slab with producer credits–for some reason, full-frame uploads I’ve found have lacked this.

But what’s missing from this upload (and any others I’ve found that include the English dub) comes at the end of the opening credits, when it zooms in on that drawing of a lighthouse. In the original French there’s a sort of “transitional” thing where it goes between art styles before finally settling on the normal look for the movie. Here though, its replaced by a fade transition.

Lately I’ve been revisiting, or wanting to revisit, classic live-action shows, normally from the 80s but with some leeway.

But a thing that comes up is you can’t always trust the official releases. I saw in another thread that Quantum Leap has issues on its various releases to the extent that a fan here had to reconstruct some episodes himself.

But what about other shows?

In particular I’m wondering about Incredible Hulk, Knight Rider, MacGyver, and Golden Girls. Are these shows known to suffer from any issues like missing music, missing footage, etc?

Let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys…

So one of my favorite movies from childhood was this obscure Franco-Belgian film called John the Fearless, or Jan Zonder Vrees. On youtube you can find a fan-made HD Remaster of the original language, but I grew up with the English dub (which you can find on archive.org… I know because I put a VHS rip there).

What would need to be done: match the English Dub soundtrack with the fan-remastered HD footage.

I’ve seen two other films that need a similar thing done:

One is the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings. For those who don’t know the original theatrical ending was during that still frame before the credits, a narrator just says “so ends the first part of the war of the One Ring.” However every DVD and bluray release I’ve seen has instead used an alternate narration which is longer and more jarring. I saw on Archive.org a VHS of the movie that has the original ending.

What would need to be done: simply splice the old narration back in to like, one minute of the movie.

Finally, there’s a movie called Asterix and Cleopatra where for some reason, any DVD that has the English dub also crops the movie to widescreen (it was originally fullscreen). Any release that is in the OAR also lacks the English dub. I could swear I once saw a version that was English but fullscreen but I’ve lost track of it.

What would need to be done: Sync the English track to the original footage. Funny thing is there’s a slight bit more footage in the original version so I’m not sure how much this complicates things.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has done these projects already?

If not… well, what would be the first step to take to do it myself, assuming I already have the actual movies? I’ve never messed with editing software before.

Thanks in advance.
